A Pottery Weekend

I've been busy all weekend preparing for the upcoming pottery season. I picked up materials for a DIY tent weight project (thanks to this page for the tips) Friday evening. When I came home, I glazed pots and prepped them for wax resist. Then I headed out to Rovin Ceramics first thing Saturday morning to watch some new tool demonstrations and pick up 500 more pounds of clay. Part of yesterday and today were spent applying wax resist designs to dozens of pots.

Farmington Holly Days

Custom Orders with Acorns

Every now and then I get an unusual request for custom pottery, like this acorn pitcher and butter dome. The acorns were sculpted by hand and the oak leaves were applied using slip trailing.

In a another week or so they will be dry enough for the bisque firing, and then the final glaze firing. I can't wait to see how they look completed!

This annual event features only hand-made items from 30 artisans. There is a $2.00 admission fee, and a portion of those proceeds will be donated to Leader Dogs for the Blind.

I spent hours putting handles on pots this week: oval casseroles, serving platter, mugs... To break up the routine, I threw some squared plates for a commissioned order.
